How did you get started doing this type of work?

I started at 8 years old working weekends and Summers for my brother-in-law.. at Durbin and Son painting. I went full-time by 12 years old due to being put out the house. I didn't realize how much I enjoyed making things beautiful and the passion just grew. I worked for the same company for over 11 years until the owner retired. I headed out to Indiana and started my own successful painting  and remodeling business for over 15 years. I made it back to California in 2002 to take care of my ailing father and ended up staying I did some local handyman stuff, painting kitchen cabinets and etc. Recently since my father is past I need to get back into the business.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I recently did a job for a well-known business owner on Signal Hill overlooking Cal State Riverside. The home was over a 6500 square feet.  The job entailed drywalling and painting the entire home  which consisted of.  1. On the main floor starting with the formal entry with 14 ft high ceiling, continuing on to the formal dining room,  theater,  living room, family room, kitchen with custom finish on cabinets, laundry room, pantry, 2 guest rooms, 3 bathrooms and an office. As we continue downstairs to the lower level we open up with the game room leading to a full bar with the wine cellar. Also two rooms and two full baths plus more.  The job was started in late September and was finished and completed so they can spend their Christmas at home. Just under 4 months! Quality work does take time!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Ask a lot of questions and work with somebody you feel comfortable with.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Think the whole job through, not just the paint, but the prep work and the time and other materials needed.  Often days are required just to prep, and those days add up to money.
